Here are some helpful tips on how to be a safe driver around bicyclists and pedestrians:
- If you see pedestrians at a crosswalk, always stop for them.
- No matter what, give pedestrians the right of way. Even if they are jaywalking or darting out in traffic, make sure you slow down and let them pass safely.
- Do not pass cars that are stopped at a crosswalk, they are stopped because they are waiting for a pedestrian to stop.
- Avoid distractions such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, talking to people in your car, or even fiddling with the radio too much. Distracted driving kills!
- Yield to pedestrians and bicyclists when turning, make sure to check your blind spot because they can surprise you.
- Look outside (and in your rearview mirror) before opening your door, there might be someone there!
- Always obey the posted speed limit.
- If you pass a stopped vehicle, be sure to slow down because someone might open the door or walk around the side and surprise you.
- Give bicyclists 3 feet of space when passing them. If you can’t pass them, patiently wait behind them until you can.
- Be extra cautious at intersections. If you are turning right, a bicyclist could be traveling behind you right in your blind spot. Make sure you check that the side you are turning on is completely clear before executing the turn.
Sharing the road with pedestrians and bicyclists is a part of being a responsible driver. Utilize these tips whenever you’re out driving and you’ll ensure the safety of yourself and others.
