Where can I take my road test?
All Star Driver Education has 2 locations at which the road test can be taken in Michigan, Ann Arbor and Benton Harbor. If we do not offer a location which is convenient for you, the Secretary of State provides a list of third-party testers.
I am under 18, when can I take the road test?
Students under the age of 18 who have completed Segment 2 must hold their Level One License for 6 months, log 50 hours of driving (10 hours must be at night) with a licensed adult over the age of 21, (Michigan Supervised Driving Log). Teen students under the age of 18 have the option to take their road test before reaching the age of 16; however, they must wait until they are 16 years old to apply for their driver’s license.
What does a teen under the age of 18 need to bring to the road test?
1.) Graduated Level One License
2.) Segment 2 Certificate of Completion
3.) A complete Michigan Supervised Driving Log documenting 50 hours of driving; 10 hours must be at night
4.) Current vehicle insurance and registration
5.) A parent or legal guardian
I am 18 or older, when can I take the road test?
Applicants 18 years of age or older, not previously licensed in this state or in any other state or country, must pass a vision and knowledge (written) test at a Michigan Secretary of State office, pay required fees, obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) and practice driving on a TIP for a minimum of 30 days to be eligible for the road test. Individuals who were previously licensed in any state and whose license has expired for more than four years may be eligible to have the 30-day holding requirement waived; a Driving Skills Test Authorization Receipt (DSTAR), formerly known as 0.01 receipt or 1 cent receipt must be obtained.
What does an individual 18 or older need to bring to the road test?

What happens if I do not bring all the required documents for my road test?
Failure to provide the required documents at the time of the road test will result in a failed road test. No refunds will be issued to an individual who does not provide the required documents. Individuals under 18 will not receive a refund if a parent or guardian is not present at the time of the road test.
Can I bring someone to ride along with me during the road test?
If you are under the age of 18 years old, you must have a legal parent or guardian to ride with you for the test. If you are 18 years old and older, no additional people are permitted to ride in the vehicle during the road test. The only exception is a translator if one is needed.
Can I rent a vehicle from All Star for my road test?
At our Ann Arbor facility, rental vehicles can be arranged for an additional fee. To secure a rental vehicle, you must select this option at the time of enrollment into the road test, or call All Star in advance of your road test to request a rental vehicle.
Is Driver Education required for individuals over 18?
While no formal Driver Education is required for an adult aged 18 or older, it can be beneficial to receive some form of instruction from an All Star instructor before attempting the road test.
How do I schedule a road test appointment with All Star?
You can enroll and schedule a road test appointment on the All Star website. After enrolling it is important to ensure your Permit information is entered correctly into your account.
Is the condition of my vehicle important when taking the road test?
If you plan to use your vehicle for the road test, be sure that it is in good working condition. Your vehicle will have to pass a safety inspection to attempt the road test. You can view the vehicle safety requirements in the Road Skills Test Study Guide. Failure to provide a proper working vehicle at the time of the road test will result in a failed road test. No refunds will be issued to an individual who does not provide a proper vehicle to test in.
What if I do not pass my road test?
You must wait at least 24 hours before you can complete a second road test attempt. No refund will be issued to an individual who fails the road test for any reason.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my road test?
A minimum of 24 hours’ notice must be provided if you wish to cancel or reschedule your road test. No refund will be issued to an individual who provides less than 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule their road test. A 24-hour notice to cancel or reschedule may be provided via detailed voicemail or email. There is no refund due to an individual who does not show up for their road test.
Can I practice at the road test site?
It is not legal to practice at the road test site.
Does it matter who conducts my road test?
Individuals may not attempt the road test with an instructor who has previously provided them with behind the wheel training.
Where will the tester take me for my road test?
The tester will inform you where your road test will take place on the day of your road test. All Star does not have access to this information. The Road Skills Study Guide provides answers to many questions about the road test.
How long does the road test last?
The road test lasts approximately 45 minutes to an hour.
Is there a limit to how many times a person may take the road test?
There is no limit to how many times an individual can attempt the road test. A fee is charged for each attempt, and you must wait 24 hours between attempts.
What if I am running late for my road test appointment?
It is important to make every effort to arrive on time for your road test. If you are more than 10 minutes late you may be refused the road test, and no refund will be issued. Confirm your road test site well in advance to avoid delays.
If it is raining or snowing, do I still have to take my test?
Yes, road tests will be conducted if there is rain or snow. A minimum of 24 hours’ notice must be provided if you wish to cancel or reschedule your road test. No refund will be issued to an individual who provides less than 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule their road test. If conditions become unsafe for a road test to be conducted, you will be contacted and informed by the tester of the cancellation.
If I have an interlock device on my vehicle, can I still take a road test?
Individuals with an interlock device must take the road test in the vehicle in which the interlock device is installed. There is a required vehicle inspection which is outlined in the Road Skills Test Study Guide.
What do I do after I pass my road test?
If you successfully complete your Driving Skills Test, the examiner will issue a Driving Skills Test Receipt. The examiner is required to sign it before presenting it to you. The Driving Skills Test Receipt is not a license. To obtain your Temporary Operator’s Permit (TOP), you will either visit a Secretary of State branch office or print your TOP by logging onto your online services account on Michigan.gov/SOS. Check your receipt for further instructions.
What do I do if I lose my Driving Skills Test Receipt?
Please contact All Star Customer Service to request a replacement Driving Skills Test Receipt.
