Requirements to obtain your Indiana Drivers Permit:
In order to apply for your driver’s license in Indiana, you must first obtain your learner’s permit. It is required for all new drivers to start with a DMV-approved learner’s permit before applying for a driver’s license. This allows the student to get acclimated to driving on the road and in real-world situations.
Drivers Education:
Drivers under 16 years of age and at least 15 years old must take a state-approved driver’s education course. Upon application, they must be able to provide their full legal name, date of birth, and social security number. If a social security number or birth certificate is not available they must provide other legal identification before proceeding. They must take a knowledge-based written test along with a vision screening test.
The knowledge-based exam contains information in the DMV Drivers Handbook. This is a 50-question multiple-choice which is broken down into two sections. Applicants are able to miss 2 of the 16 questions on road signs, and 6 of the 34 questions on traffic road rules. You do not need to make an appointment to schedule the test. Walk-ins can take the exam at the BMV. A passing score is 84% or higher.
Restrictions:
If a student has gained their learner’s permit and is under the age of 18 they must have a legally licensed driver over the age of 25 in the car with them when driving. If the student is over the age of 16 they do not need to take a driver’s education course to obtain a learner’s permit and at 18 they can apply for their unrestricted license. It is still highly recommended to take at least 6 hours of driver education.
