How to Get a Teen Driver’s License in Michigan?
Getting your driver’s license may seem intimidating at first. We will show you how to do so in 3 easy steps, the All Star Way!
Caution: Note that Michigan Secretary of State does not offer online driver education. You may come across some companies offering online drivers ed in Michigan. Note that these are not Michigan SOS approved.
Step One: Enroll in Segment 1
At 14 years and 9 months, you’re old enough to begin your training as a new Michigan driver. You can enroll for segment 1 at: https://www.allstardrivereducation.com/class/michigan-segment-1/.
Each class is 2 hours in length with a total of 12 classes. You will also have behind the wheel lessons for at least 6 hours. Feel free take more drives to feel confident. You will also be required to observe another student for 4 additional hours.
At the end of the class, you will take a test and will need to score at least 70%. At this point you will be issued a Green Certificate after the class.
You can visit your local branch of the Secretary of State to get your level 1 license. You need to bring along with you your Green Certificate, Photo ID, Birth Certificate and the application fee.
Step Two: Complete Segment 2 Driver’s Education
Now it’s been 90 days since you earned your level 1 learners licence, you have done 30 hours of behind the wheel instruction with your parent or with a licensed adult who is 21 or older, and now it’s time to take segment 2.
Segment 2 consists of at least six hours of instruction, two hours a day. On the last day, in the second hour you will take a written test. You must get at least a 70% to pass. After that, it’s time to start focusing on passing your road skills test.
Again, you can enroll for segment 2 at: https://www.allstardrivereducation.com/class/michigan-segment-2/.
Step Three: Taking the Road Test
To take the road test you must:
- Hold a level 1 license for at least 6 months
- Have a minimum of 50 hours of drive time
- Complete Segment 1
- Complete Segment 2
When you get to the road testing site, you will need to first do various parking maneuvers, after which you will get on the road to various road training maneuvers. If you are able to complete both of those portions correctly, you will have passed your road test.
We offer road test at 5 locations across Michigan: https://www.allstardrivereducation.com/class/michigan-road-testing/.
