What is Segment 1?
Segment 1 consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction, six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and four hours of observation time. This is the first step a student under the age of 18 will need to take in order to obtain their license. The student will also need to complete a Segment 2 course and a road test to obtain their license.
In select locations, we offer Silver and Gold packages, which include additional behind-the-wheel training. All packages offer the same classroom and observation time. The Silver package offers two extra hours behind the wheel (eight hours total) and the Gold package offers four extra hours behind the wheel (10 hours total). These packages are optional, as the Bronze package provides the state requirements for driver education. If the Silver or Gold packages are available in your location, they will show up on the website during registration.
How long does it take to obtain a driver’s license?
The entire process takes a minimum of 6–7 months depending on when the student receives their Graduated Level 1 License and how quickly the student and the family wish to progress.

How do I get my certificate?
After the student completes the class, their drives and the written test, your certificate will be emailed to you within 5–10 business days. It will be emailed to both the parent and student emails on file in the Net Driver Ed account created during registration.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover. If you need to make other payment arrangements, feel free to call our corporate office. We also accept payment from government organizations as well. If you do not have one of these cards available to you, we also accept pre-paid Visa, Discover and MasterCard.
Do you have any payment plans available?
Our payment plan is as follows:
Half the price of the class must be paid at the time of registration in order to hold the student's spot in class. The rest will be due seven days before the course begins. If the remaining amount is not paid at that time, the student will be removed and will not be allowed to attend the class. Keep in mind: this payment can only be made over the phone by calling our corporate office and cannot be made online.
What do I need to bring to the first day of class?
PLEASE NOTE: You must upload all the paperwork listed below to your All Star Online account (Class and Drive Login) at least 7 days before the start of class or else you will be removed from the class:
- Scan copy of student's birth certificate
- Segment One contract
Do parents need to attend the first day of class?
It is not necessary for parents to attend the first day of class with their students as long as they have uploaded the required paperwork to their accounts. We do hold an informational parent meeting on the last day of class. For details, please talk with the classroom instructor.
What is covered in the cost for Segment 1?
The cost for Segment 1 covers your student’s classroom instruction, activities, workbook, behind-the-wheel driving instruction, gas and tax. The cost for Segment 2 is not included unless you purchase the Segment 1 and Segment 2 combo at the time of registration for a discount.
How do the students sign up for driving times? When do the students drive?
Students can schedule drives through their Net Driver Ed account that they created when they registered. The username is the email you used to register. Click "forgot password" to change your password.
If you don't see drive times available, they may be all booked! Typically, drive times are posted weekly by the instructors themselves. These times are also shared with the students.
How it works
There are six, two-hour-long behind-the-wheel sessions. The student will be paired with another student in the class and the two of them will take turns driving with an instructor for one hour each. When the student isn't driving, they will be observing the other driver. This is when the four hours of observation are completed.
All Star wishes to accommodate families and busy schedules by offering a wide variety of drive times, including before and after class and on weekends. All Star does not assign drive times and we allow students to schedule their own drives according to when they are available. Please keep proper documentation of your scheduled drives and if any changes need to be made, please contact your classroom instructor.
What happens if a student misses a class or a drive?
Students are expected to be present for every class and drive unless there is a good reason for an absence.
Students are allowed to miss up to three classroom sessions, however, after the first absence, there is a fee of $30 per missed day, meaning if the student misses two more days they will be charged $60 total. If an absence occurs the student is expected to make up the missed material in the next month’s session (example: if you missed day 5, you must make up day 5 of the next session). You will not receive your Certificate of Completion until you do so.
If you do not show up or are more than 10 minutes late for a drive, you will be subject to a $30 no-show fee. It is imperative that students arrive on time for their scheduled drives. A 48-hour notice is required to cancel and reschedule a drive time and if you cancel within less than 48-hours, you will be charged a $30 late rescheduling fee.
What if there is a snow day?
If your school district has announced a snow day, All Star’s classes (including scheduled drives) at the respective location will be canceled as well. Please keep this in mind if you are attending a classroom location other than your own school, or a community location. If the driving instructor decides that the road conditions are good enough to drive in later that day, they might call you to let you know drives will still take place as scheduled. Please make sure all of the contact information has been updated in your online account.
What kind of cars do you use?
We use late model, low mileage, 5-star safety rated vehicles. Each has passenger side brake pedals, giving instructors complete control. Every car is cleaned and sanitized regularly and comes stocked with hand sanitizer and a first-aid kit. All vehicles undergo constant and detailed inspections by our operations department.
Is my student allowed to drive out of the State of Michigan with their Graduated Level 1 License?
The Level 1 Learner’s License may or may not be recognized in another state. You will need to contact the licensing agency in the other state to see if that state will recognize Michigan’s Level 1 Learner’s License.
Help! I’ve lost my Segment 1 certificate! What can I do?
No worries! Your certificate was emailed to you, so you should be able to go back and find that email to print it off again. Need it emailed again or resent to a new email? No problem! Give our office a call and we can resend it.
If your certificate was a paper copy issued before May 2021, certificates can be issued for a $30 fee. We can only reissue certificates for classes you took with All Star, not with other companies. Please contact the office immediately to have this reissued. It takes 2 business days to reissue a certificate, so please be sure to allow enough time if you need this by a specific day. When contacting the office, be sure to have your full name, date of birth, and class location as well as the date that you completed the class.
Photocopies of certificates are not kept on file and are not accepted at the Secretary of State’s office or road testing agencies. We do not fax copies to other driver education schools for road testing purposes, either. Please contact the office for more information.
NOTE: If you already have your Graduated Level 1 License (permit), you will not need to have a reissue of your segment 1 certificate.
How old does the student have to be in order to enroll in a Segment 1 course?
Students must be at least 14 years and 8 months old by the first day of class in order to attend. No exceptions may be made with this rule since it is regulated by the Michigan Dept. of State.
If classes are virtual, why is there a limit on the number of students?
The State still prohibits us from having more than a set number of students in the class, even if the class is virtual.
What if I do not have an original birth certificate?
State documents verifying your age are also accepted. Examples: passport, state identification card, etc.
How many hours of drive times do the students need?
Segment one requires a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor. Students will need to sign up for six separate sessions which will run for two hours per session. During these two-hour sessions, there is one other student in the vehicle along with your student and the instructor. The two students will drive for one hour each during the session. When a student is not driving, they will be using this time to observe and learn by filling out a worksheet in the back seat while the other student drives. Each student is required to have 4 hours of observation time.
Why can’t the parents sign up for the student’s drive times?
This is a good question and there are a number of reasons All Star wishes for the students to sign up for their own drive times. The foremost reason concerns the responsibility: the All Star staff and instructors believe that we aren’t just teaching the students how to drive, but educating them on all responsibilities that are involved with operating a motor vehicle. Therefore, part of this responsibility includes scheduling and keeping accurate records of their drive times and communicating this schedule to their parents or guardians.
I am over 18 years old. Can I still take Segment 1?
Yes, you can take the class to learn, but you will not receive a certificate for taking this class as it is not required by the state for adults.
It is crucial that you first obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) from your local Secretary of State branch office. This document will allow you to participate in the driving portion of the class. Your permit will cost $25 and requires that you pass a written exam. You must bring a photocopy of your valid TIP to your first day of class along with a completed Michigan Adult Segment 1 contract, which can be found under the resources link on the home page of our website. If you wish to postpone obtaining your TIP, you will only be allowed to complete the classroom portion of Segment 1.
What does the green certificate that my student received after Segment 1 mean? Is that their Graduated Level 1 License?
The green certificate is the Michigan Graduated Segment 1 Certificate of Completion — This is NOT a permit and it does not allow the student to drive with an adult or guardian. This document simply verifies that your student has successfully completed the Segment 1 program and may now apply for their Graduated Level 1 License (aka their driving permit) through the Secretary of State. They are only qualified to drive once they have gone to the Secretary of State and been issued their permit. Students must be present to obtain this permit.

Who is my student allowed to drive with when they receive their Graduated Level 1 License (aka permit)?
- A licensed adult driver, 21 years of age or older.
- A licensed, legal parent/guardian

What about the Graduated Level 1 License (aka permit)? Does that expire as well?
There is an expiration date on the Graduated Level 1 License — it should be the student’s 18th birthday. This is the day that the permit expires. The student has until that date to take a road test.
