Getting your license in Michigan is less complicated than you think. The driver education process in Michigan is broken into 3 phases —Segment 1, Segment 2 and Road Test. All Star Driver Education has this step-by-step blog to help you from the classroom all the way to getting your license!
Step 1: Enroll in Segment One
If you are at least 14 years and eight months old, you can start your journey by signing up for one of our segment one courses through www.allstarde.com. Our website allows you to search with your ZIP code so you can easily find the most convenient location. This course consists of 24 hours of class time and has a written test at the end.
In segment one, you will also get to experience real-world driving with at least 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and 4 hours of observation. You can start signing up for your drives after you attend Day 1 of your class. Once you pass segment one, hand in your certificate to the secretary of state to receive your level 1 license. Congratulations, you have reached level one!
Step 2: Behind-the-Wheel Experience
Now it’s time to start practicing driving with your parents. You need to complete at least 30 hours of driving time. At least 2 of your driving hours must be done at night.
Step 3: Gear Up for Segment Two
After holding your level one license for at least three months and recording 30 hours of drive time you are eligible to sign-up for segment two. This portion includes 6 hours of classroom time and another comprehension test at the end. Remember to sign-up for your Segment 2 class early and block your seat.
Step 4: Master the Road
Once you make it through segment two, you must hold your level one license for at least 6 months and record 50 hours of drive time. This hands-on experience will prepare you for the grand finale – your road test.
Step 5: Nailing the Road Test
With everything you have learned up to this point, you should be able to conquer the road test. In order to take the test, make sure you bring ALL of your required identification documents. To take the test, you will need to bring your completed drive log, your segment 2 certificate and valid insurance and registration documents for the vehicle you plan to use. Once you pass, the secretary of state will reward your efforts by mailing you your level 2 license. Congratulations, you are now a fully licensed driver in Michigan!
