Why should you wear it?
One of the easiest things you can do to improve safety in a vehicle is to wear your seatbelt. Seatbelts help keep you in place in the event of a crash, and they are also required in most instances by law. Lives are saved or lost by the simple decision to use or not to use a seatbelt. Modern cars have many features to help keep their occupants safe, but seatbelts usage should still be a top safety concern for drivers Airbags and other safety features are made to work in conjunction with seatbelts (Not As A Replacement) to protect you!
Fighting Inertia
When a vehicle suddenly stops, the passenger will still move forward due to inertia. Seatbelts tether people to their vehicle so that when it stops, they can be pulled to a stop as well. Wearing a seatbelt will help distribute the force from a crash to parts of your body that can more easily withstand the force. Improper seatbelt usage can result in seatbelts being less effective and potentially dangerous to the user.
Proper Usage
To properly wear a seatbelt, you need to have the main strap across the center of your chest (Not Behind You) and closer to your shoulder than your neck. The loop on your lap needs to be snug on your lap and below your stomach. Being mindful of how you put your seatbelt on every single time can prevent accidental injury and ejection.
It’s the Law
Officers in certain states can pull drivers over for nothing other than wearing a seatbelt and the potential fines are around $60. Settlement money that is received due to a crash could be reduced because the occupant did not wear a seatbelt. Certain states allow adults to not wear a seatbelt while riding in the back seat, but there are no safety features added to support the back seat being any safer than the front. Just because something isn’t illegal, doesn’t mean it’s safe.
Statistics
Putting on a seatbelt only takes a few seconds. Seatbelts reduce the risk of death by 45% and reduce the chance that you are seriously injured by 50%. The NHTSA claims that in 2016, seat belts saved nearly 15,000 lives. But nearly 2,500 more lives would have been saved if everyone had buckled up. Their use saved almost 15,000 American lives in 2017. In 2020, over 23,000 died in passenger vehicles, and 51% of them were just not wearing their seatbelt. It is estimated that seat belts have saved around 375,000 lives since they have been implemented.
