Frequently Asked Questions Michigan Road Testing
Where can I take a road test?
All Star Driver Education offers the driving skills test in Benton Harbor, Michigan. If we do not have a testing site near to you, there is a complete list of companies and locations by county found on the Secretary of State website.
Do you offer a rental vehicle?
Rental vehicles are offered at select times and dates for an additional fee. If the road test is not labelled with “Car Rental Available,” there is no car rental for that date and time.
Does a student have to be 16 years old to take a road test?
Not necessarily. The student must have held their Level One license for a minimum of six months, have completed Segment 2, and have logged at least 50 hours of driving (with at least 10 hours at night) with a licensed adult over the age of 21 years. Students can take a road test once they meet all of those requirements, however, they cannot obtain their license at the SOS until they are 16 years of age.
What training is required to be eligible for a road test?
If you are under 18 years old:
- Must be 15 years or older to test.
- Must have held their Graduated Level One license for a minimum of six months or longer.
- Must have driven and logged 50 hours of driving, with at least 10 hours at night, with a licensed adult driver over 21 years old.

If you are over 18 years old or have a foreign license:
- Must have been to the SOS and passed the written test.
- Must have received a 1-Cent Receipt from the SOS (for a foreign license only).
- Must test within the 30 days required; if you don’t, you must get a re-issue
NOTE: No formal driver education is required for an adult (18 years or older), however, it may be a good idea to consult with a driving instructor before taking the road test.
How do I sign up for an appointment?
Appointments can be made from our website. You must bring your Level One license or Temporary Instruction Permit as well as payment via Mastercard, Visa or Discover in order to schedule an appointment (we also accept pre-paid). If you have a foreign driver’s license, please have that, and your 1-cent receipt ready.
What should I bring to the road test?
If you are under 18 years old:
Graduated Level One License
Segment Two Completion Certificate
Drive Log showing at least 50 hours of driving (10 of which should be at night).
A picture/school ID or legal document showing identity
Valid vehicle Insurance and Registration

Valid vehicle Insurance and Registration
Out of state/country adult:

What if I don’t pass my road test?
You must wait at least 24 hours before rescheduling the road test. We do not give refunds for failed road tests, nor do we dismiss the fee for a second road test. This includes documentation failures.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my road test?
To cancel or reschedule a road test, you must contact our office at least 24 hours in advance. If you call after hours, then you will need to leave a voicemail with your name, phone number, and brief reason for your call within the 24 hour grace period, as the voicemail, will provide the date and time of your call. If you do not show up for your road test, or do not contact our office 24 hours in advance, you will forfeit the fee for the road test, and have to pay again in full for another test. You may also email us at least 24 hours in advance for cancellation as well.
Can I practice at the road test site?
Legally, you cannot practice on the road testing site. Our site is only set up during scheduled test times. Also, you may not test with the same instructor that taught you the behind the wheel in segment 1, or had any private lessons with. Lastly, we cannot provide any route information to you, if you wish to know more about the road test or review, please visit: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/ROAD_SKILLS_TEST_STUDY_GUIDE_05-02_21935_7.pdf
How long does the road test last?
Approximately one hour, however, it can vary slightly at each location.
Is there a limit to how many times a person may take the road test?
There is no limit, but keep in mind that the price is the same for each test.
What if I am running late for my road test appointment?
If you are 10 or more minutes late for a road test, you may be turned away at the discretion of the road test examiner. There are no refunds issued if you are unable to arrive on time for your scheduled road test. Please note that our corporate office is not a road testing site. All locations, addresses, and specific instructions to get to each road test site are listed on our website.
What happens if I don’t bring all the required items to my road test?
Failure to bring all of the required documents (listed above) will result in a failed road test. No refunds will be issued. If you are under the age of 18, but did not bring a parent or legal guardian to the road test, you will be turned away and no refund will be issued.
If it is raining or snowing, do I still have to take my test?
Yes. If you feel that you will not be able to take your test, you must notify our office at least 24 hours in advance as stated above to cancel or reschedule a test. In the event that the weather has provided an unsafe condition to conduct road tests for that day, the road test examiner or our corporate office staff will contact you.
If I have an interlock device on my vehicle, can I still take a road test?
Yes, in fact if you have a vehicle with an interlock device, that is the only vehicle you are allowed to use. It is important to make sure that your vehicle with the interlock device installed on it will pass the vehicle inspection portion of the test. The list of items that must be operating on your vehicle can be found here in the Road Skills Test Study Guide. http://www.michigan.gov/documents/ROAD_SKILLS_TEST_STUDY_GUIDE_05-02_21935_7.pdf
What if I lose my road test certificate?
For a reissue of a road test certificate there is a $30.00 fee. To pay for a road test certificate you can do so by calling or visiting our corporate office. Once we receive payment, we can set up hot to get your new certificate (it can be mailed or you can meet up with the examiner).

Segment One
What is Segment One?
A Segment one class consists of 24 hours of classroom, 6 hours of behind-the-wheel, and 4 hours of observation. This is the first step a student under the age of 18 will need to take in order to obtain their license. The student will also need to complete a segment two course and road test to obtain their license.
In select locations, we do offer silver and gold packages, which include additional drive training. All packages offer the same classroom and observation time. Silver package offers 2 extra hours behind the wheel (8 total) and gold offers 4 extra hours behind the wheel (10 total). This is optional as the bronze package provides the state requirements for driver’s education. If this is available in your location, it will display as such on the website during registration.
How long does it take to obtain a driver’s license?
The entire process takes a minimum of 6-7 months depending on when the student receives their Graduated Level One License and how quickly the student and the family wish to progress. We have this handy document here to explain and break down the process and steps to obtaining the license: https://www.allstardrivereducation.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/ONLINE-PDF-guide-mi.pdf
How do I get my certificate?
After you complete the class, all drives, and the test; your certificate will be emailed to you in 5-10 business days. It will be emailed to both the parent and student emails on file in the Net Driver Ed account created during registration.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. If you need to make other payment arrangements, feel free to call our corporate office to make arrangements. We also accept payment from government organizations as well. If you do not have one of those cards available to you, we also accept pre-paid Visa, Discover, and MasterCard.
Do you have any payment plans available?
Our payment plan is as follows: Half payment of the entire class price must be done at the time of registration to hold your spot in class. The remaining balance will be due 7 days before the course begins. If this is not paid at this time, the student will be removed, and will not be allowed to attend the class. Keep in mind, this cannot be done on the website, and can only be done over the phone when calling our corporate office.
What do I need to bring to the first day of class?
PLEASE NOTE: You must upload all the paperwork listed below on your All Star online account (Class and Drive Login) at least 7 days before the start of class else you will be removed from the class.
- Scan copy of student’s birth certificate
- Segment One contract
Do parents need to attend the first day of class?
It is not necessary for parents to be there on the first day of class with their students as long as the students have the required paperwork uploaded to their account. We do hold an informational parent meeting on the last day of class. For details, please talk with the classroom instructor.
What is covered in the cost for Segment One?
The cost for segment one covers your student’s classroom time, driving, taxes, activities, book, and gas. The cost for segment two is not included unless you purchase seg 1 and seg 2 combo at the time of registration for a discount.
How do the students sign up for driving times? When do the students drive?
Students can schedule drives through their Net Driver Ed account created during registration (https://allstardrivereducation.netdrivered.com/login). The username is the email you used to register. You can click on forgot password to change the password.
If you don’t see drive times available, they may be all booked up! More are typically posted weekly for you to schedule. The drive times are posted by the instructor directly and shared with the students.
Generally, your student will be paired with another student in the class, the 4 hours of observation are completed with the 6 hours behind the wheel. All Star wishes to accommodate families and busy schedules by offering a wide variety of drive times, including before and after class and on weekends. All Star does not assign drive times, we allow the students to schedule their own drive times according to when they are able to drive. Please keep proper documentation of these so you can arrive on time. Any changes needed to be made, please contact the classroom instructor.
What happens if a student misses a class or a drive?
Students are expected to be present for every class and drive time unless there is good cause for an absence.
Students are allowed to miss up to 3 classroom sessions, however, after the first absence, there is a charge of $30 per missed day (meaning missed day #2 and #3 you will be charged $30 each, $60 total, to make them up). If an absence occurs the student is expected to make up the missed material in the next month’s session(example: if you missed day 5, you must make up day 5). You will not receive your Certificate of Completion until you do so.
If you do not show up or are more than 10 minutes late for a drive time you will be subject to a $30 no-show fee. It is imperative that students arrive on time for their scheduled drive time. A 48-hour notice is required to cancel and reschedule a drive time, if you cancel in less than 48-hours before your drive time, you will be charged a $30 late rescheduling fee.
What if there is a snow day?
If your school district has announced a snow day, All Star’s classes (which include driving times) at the respective location will be canceled as well. Please keep this in mind if you are attending a classroom location other than your own school, or a community location. If the student’s driving instructor decides that the road conditions are good enough to drive in later that day, they might be calling you to let you know drives will still take place as scheduled. Please make sure all contact information has been updated in your online account.
What kind of cars do you use?
We use late model, low mileage, 5-star safety rated vehicles. Each has right-side brake pedals, giving instructors complete control. Each is cleaned and sanitized regularly and comes with a hand sanitizer and first-aid kit. All undergo constant and detailed inspections by our operations department.
Is my son/daughter allowed to drive out of the State of Michigan with their Graduated Level One License?
The Level 1 Learner’s License may or may not be recognized in another state. You will need to contact the licensing agency in the other state to see if that state will recognize Michigan’s Level 1 Learner’s License.
Help! I’ve lost my Segment One certificate! What can I do?
No worries! Your certificate was emailed to you, so you should be able to go back and find that email to print it off again. Need it emailed again/to a new email? No problem! Give us a call and we can resend it!
If your certificate was a paper copy issued before May 2021, certificates can be issued for a $30 fee. We can only reissue certificates for classes you took with All Star, not with other companies. Please contact the office immediately to have this reissued. It takes 2 business days to reissue a certificate, so please be sure to allow enough time if you need this by a specific day. When contacting the office, be sure to have your full name, date of birth, and class location as well as the date that you completed the class.
Photocopies of certificates are not kept on file and are not accepted at the Secretary of State’s office or road testing agencies. We do not fax copies to other driver education schools for road testing purposes, either. Please contact the office for more information.
NOTE: If you already have your Graduated Level 1 License (permit), you will not need to have a reissue of your segment 1 certificate.
How old does the student have to be in order to enroll in a Segment One course?
Students must be at least 14 years and 8 months old by the first day of class in order to attend. No exceptions may be made with this rule since it is regulated by the Michigan Dept. of State.
If classes are virtual, why is there a limit on the number of students?
The State still prohibits us from having more than a set number of students in the class, even if the class is virtual.
What if I do not have an original birth certificate?
State documents verifying your age are also accepted. Examples: passport, state identification card, etc.
How many hours of drive times do the students need?
Segment one requires a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor. Students will need to sign up for six separate sessions which will run for two hours per session. During these two-hour sessions, there is one other student in the vehicle along with your student and the instructor. The two students will drive for one hour each during the session. When a student is not driving, they will be using this time to observe and learn by filling out a worksheet in the back seat while the other student drives. Each student is required to have 4 hours of observation time.
Why can’t the parents sign up for the student’s drive times?
This is a good question and there are a number of reasons All Star wishes for the students to sign up for their own drive times. The foremost reason concerns the responsibility: the All Star staff and instructors believe that we aren’t just teaching the students how to drive, but educating them on all responsibilities that are involved with operating a motor vehicle. Therefore, part of this responsibility includes scheduling and keeping accurate records of their drive times and communicating this schedule to their parents or guardians.
I am over 18 years old. Can I still take Segment One?
Yes, you can take the class to learn, you will not receive a certificate for taking this class, as it is not state required for adults.
It is crucial that you first obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) from your local Secretary of State Branch Office. This document will allow you to participate in the driving portion of this class. Your permit will cost $25 and requires that you pass a written exam. You must bring a photocopy of your valid TIP to your first day of class, along with your completed Michigan adult segment 1 contract found under our resources link on the home page of our website. If you wish to postpone obtaining your TIP, you will only be allowed to complete the classroom portion of Segment 1.
The green certificate that my student received after Segment One, what does that mean? Is that their Graduated Level One License?
The green certificate is the Michigan Graduated Segment One Certificate of Completion – This is NOT a permit and does not allow your son or daughter to drive with an adult or guardian. This document simply verifies that your student has successfully completed the Segment One program and may now apply for their Graduated Level One License through the Secretary of State (a.k.a driving permit). They are only qualified to drive once they have gone to the Secretary of State, and have been issued their permit. Students must be present to obtain this permit.
What do we bring with us to the Secretary of State when we go to get my son/daughter’s permit?
Please click on this link to view the Secretary of State Identification requirements: http://www.mich.gov/documents/sos/Applying_for_lic_or_ID_SOS_428_222146_7.pdf
Who is my student allowed to drive with when they receive their Graduated Level One License (a.k.a. permit)?
A licensed adult driver, 21 years of age or older.
A licensed, legal parent/guardian
For more information, please refer to Michigan’s Graduated Driver Licensing: A Guide for Parents at the following link: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/gdl_parent_16316_7.pdf
What about the Graduated Level One License (a.k.a. permit)? Does that expire as well?
There is an expiration date on the Graduated Level One – it should be the student’s 18th birthday. This is the day that the permit expires and you have until that date to take a road test.
What are the requirements for obtaining an original Driver’s License or personal identification card?

If you have already paid for segment 2 when you signed up for segment 1 as a combo, please call our office, and a representative can get you signed up. If you’re unsure if you paid for the combo, give us a call or send us an email, and we can check that for you!

Please make sure all contact information has been updated with your instructors if you have changed.
Do students drive in Segment Two?
There is no driving portion in Segment 2. Some locations do have availability for ‘silver’ and ‘gold’ packages. These offer 1 and 2 drives for the student, respectively. These drives are treated as private lessons, and are not guaranteed to be completed during the class duration, as state-mandated drives are treated with priority.
I took Segment One through a different company, can I still take Segment 2 through All Star?
Absolutely you can! As long as you meet the requirements explained directly below, you can take the course with us!
What are the requirements and documents to take this course?
You must hold your level 1 license for at least 3 months, and have 30 hours of driving practice (with at least 2 at night) logged in either an app or on paper.
You will need to upload these documents to your online account 7 days before the class, along with the Segment 2 contract. The contract is emailed to the parent first, then after the parent completes their portion, it is forwarded to the student to complete theirs. A paper copy of the document can also be found on the Michigan homepage on our website to upload directly to your account.
What is a license issue date?
On a level 1 license issued before May of 2021, the license issue date is found at the top of the card, there is a series of 8 numbers that reflect the date (for example, 03122020, is March 12th, 2020.) On the new level 1 license, the physical card, and the receipt from the Secretary of State, the issue date is explicitly labelled.
Do you accommodate learning or physically disabled students?
All Star strives to work with students of all learning and physical levels, however, there are certain limits to what we are able to do. For further information, please contact the main office at (734) 665-7374.

We do not currently have any discounts running for segment 2.
Do you have any payment plans available?
We do not have any payment plans available for segment 2., the payment must be made up front during registration.
If classes are virtual, why is there a limit on the number of students?
The State still prohibits us from having more than a set number of students in the class, even if the class is virtual.
Do parents need to attend the first day of class?
It is not necessary for parents to attend any days of Segment 2. They are more than welcome to sit in though.
What happens if a student misses a class?
Due to the brief length of Segment 2, students are not allowed to miss any classroom sessions. If the student misses any of the class (this includes tardiness/leaving early!) they will have to fully retake the class.
What if there is a snow day?
If your school district has announced a snow day, All Star’s at the respective location will be canceled as well. Please keep this in mind if you are attending a classroom location other than your own school
Do you have classroom numbers?
If you’re taking an in-person class, the classroom number should be emailed to you with the information in the class in the coming days before it starts.
I am over 18 years old. Can I still take Segment Two?
Of course you can! You’ll just have to contact our office after registering for the Adult contract, in addition, you will not receive a certificate for completing the course, it will be for education purposes only.
Does my Segment 2 completion certificate expire?
The expiration date of the Segment 2 certificate is the student’s 18th birthday. This is the same for their Level One License. You have until that date to take a road test. Otherwise, your permit will need to be renewed at the Secretary of State.
Help! I’ve lost my Segment Two certificate! What can I do?
No worries! Your certificate was emailed to you, so you should be able to go back and find that email to print it off again. Need it emailed again/to a new email? No problem! Give us a call and we can resend it!
If your certificate was a paper copy issued before May of 2021, Certificates can be issued for a $30 fee.
If I don’t attend that location, can I still take classes there?
Yes, there are no restrictions that don’t allow students from other schools to attend classes at another facility. Keep in mind, for in-person classes, you must be willing to drive to that location to attend, and for virtual classes, you must still drive there for the in-person test.
Can I schedule a road test at the same time that I schedule Segment 2?
You may, but we do not recommend this. Instances can occur, such as delays in your certificate (they can take 5-10 business days to be emailed from the last date of class), losing your certificate, etc., that may prevent you from attending your pre-scheduled road test. We recommend waiting until you have your certificate to schedule your road test.
How long do I have to wait before I can schedule a road test? What’s the next step?
You can schedule your road test when you have your segment 2 certificate, have driven on your Level One License for 6 months or longer, and have completed 50 hours of supervised driving including 10 hours at night.
I am 15 years old. Can I still take my road test?
Yes, as long as you meet the requirements, you can still road test at 15. You will not be able to receive your driver’s license until you are 16 years old. You can visit the Secretary of State at that time.
What are the requirements for obtaining an original Driver’s License or personal identification card?
Please click on this link to view the Secretary of State Identification requirements: http://www.mich.gov/documents/sos/Applying_for_lic_or_ID_SOS_428_222146_7.pdf

We never went down to the Secretary of State, and received the Graduated Level One License; can’t we just show the Segment One completion certificate in order to take Segment Two?
Unfortunately no, you must have gone to the Secretary of State, and received your Graduated Level One Learners License at least 3 consecutive months before starting Segment Two. If not, your son/daughter will not be allowed to take Segment Two until they have done so. The other requirement before taking Segment Two is that your son/daughter has completed at least 30 hours of behind the wheel instruction (remember that two of the hours of training must be at night). Please remember that it is very important you go to the Secretary of State immediately after receiving the Segment One completion certificate, so you can get your son/daughter’s Graduated Level One License as soon as possible. Not doing so, could delay your son/daughter in getting their license on time.
What if I don’t pass my written test on the first try?
Students are allowed three attempts at the final exam. If you don’t pass your first test you will have two more attempts. To schedule a make-up test, give us a call, and we can either get you scheduled for an appointment at our corporate office (offered Mon-Fri 9:30-3:30), or added to the make up day list to be contacted when the next test for your location is scheduled.
Can you email me my certificate instead?
Yes, as of May 2021, we now email certificates, no physical copy is given, you print out the certificate we email you, and bring that printed copy to the Secretary of state. If you’re reissuing a certificate from before then, a physical copy, please see above for losing a certificate.
What is the cancellation/refund policy for the Segment 2 course?
Refunds will be processed in full if a class/service is canceled by ASDE. Refunds can take 7-10 business days and will put back on to the card you paid with. No refund will be issued if the student is expelled due to disciplinary reasons. In addition, if a student is removed due to missing class, if they have attended any class, they will not be eligible for a refund.
